What Is Argon — and Why It Matters

Argon is a critical shielding gas used with Sunstone Orion® welding systems. During welding, metals reach temperatures exceeding 7,000°F, becoming molten so the weld can form. At these extreme temperatures, exposure to air can compromise weld quality.

Argon protects the molten weld pool from atmospheric elements like oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen, which can cause porosity, excess spatter, and weak connections.

By shielding the weld zone, argon helps:

  • Maintain arc stability
  • Improve weld penetration
  • Enable smoother filler wire transfer
  • Produce cleaner, more consistent welds with less soot

Sunstone’s Premium Argon is 99.996% pure (Argon 4.6)—meaning it’s 100% argon with no mixed gases—delivering the consistency and performance permanent jewelry artists rely on for professional results.

A dependable foundation for clean welds, strong connections, and long-lasting jewelry.

How Big Is the Tank?

  • Weight: 44 lbs

  • Dimensions: 27" tall × 7" diameter

  • Capacity: 50 scf

This 50 scf tank is the most commonly used size with Sunstone Orion® welding systems—large enough for consistent use without being difficult to manage.

How Long Will an Argon Tank Last?

Usage time varies based on how often you weld, your pressure settings, and pre- and post-flow adjustments. On average, a 50 scf argon tank lasts approximately 6–9 months for most permanent jewelry artists.

Not sure which size is right for you? The argon tank size comparison chart makes it easy to choose the best fit for your workflow.

Do I Need an Argon Regulator?

Yes. If you don’t already have a compatible regulator, we strongly recommend purchasing one designed specifically for this tank. Using the correct regulator ensures proper gas flow, reliable performance, and a smooth setup from day one.

Please note: The Argon Mini® regulator is not compatible with this tank.

What Does Argon Do?

Argon acts as a shielding gas, protecting your weld from oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen in the air—elements that can cause porosity, spatter, and weak connections.

By shielding the weld zone, argon helps:

  • Improve weld penetration
  • Create stronger, cleaner connections
  • Reduce soot and spatter
  • Deliver smoother, more consistent welds

In short, argon helps your welds look better and last longer—exactly what you want for permanent jewelry work.
